A star performance from Pentland Hills Navy Strength Gin

Last year we shared the news of Pentland Hills Gin’s release of a navy Strength Gin. Well, it has certainly gone from strength to strength and it has just received the highest accolade from the Guild of Fine Food with the award of a 3 Star Great Taste medal!

This means that Pentland Hills Navy Strength Gin – ‘Electra’ will now be considered for the ultimate award of this year’s Golden Fork, the winner of which will be announced in October.

Pentland Hills Gin is the vision of Phil and Tabatha Cox who undertake all the distilling at their smallholding in the western Pentland Hills adjacent to the village of Tarbrax. The gin has been created to honour Phil’s grandfather who was lost at sea, with many of his shipmates, when HMS Electra was sunk during the Battle of the Java Sea.

The tasting notes from the Great Taste panel members make great reading describing the 58% ABV strength gin as:

‘complex and interesting aroma that had many layers. There is plenty of juniper, spice, a hint of cocoa and some floral notes with lots of pretty, bright pink pepper. Lovely initial creaminess in the mouth precedes a slight sweetness which is followed by the punch of alcohol. Again, we were impressed by the range of botanical flavours which came through.
We loved the underlying base notes of the cocoa which helped ground the higher more spicy flavours from the pepper, cardamom, root and seeds. A very considered blend of botanicals that has been skillfully executed.
This is silky and smooth and carries the botanicals beautifully on their journey. And what a long and lasting journey it is! Such a complex finish after such a well-balanced journey. This is wonderful.

We couldn’t agree more and we’re absolutely thrilled for the team at Pentland hills for this well-deserved accolade!

The gin has also won a number of awards and recently was awarded a Silver Medal at the London Spirits Competition and Bronze at the World Gin Awards, and the even better news is the gin, along with Phil, Tabatha and the Chocolate Labrador Panza will be at the Scottish Game Fair from 24th till the 26th September at Scone. Their stand can be found in Duck Row – D6.
