  The Vára Pink Gin Story

For Orkney couple, Stuart and Adelle Brown, brewing and distilling have been hobbies since 1996. Over the years, they’ve created spirits, beers, wines and liqueurs, with varying degrees of success! But they took on board their experience, good and bad, and used it to create their range of craft spirits and liqueurs – all of which have won major awards (including best Gin in the UK, best Vodka and best Liqueur in the world) so, it’s pretty clear that these pair know a thing or 2 about creating great drinks.

When they realised they would need a distillery, they set about creating their own on land next to the family home in the beautiful Orkney Islands The resourceful couple took just 3 months to build it from scratch and Deerness Distillery was born! And they have big plans for growth in 2022, with a new whisky still house, malt house and café / bar and shop being added to the existing building.

They are passionate about what goes into their gin, growing a huge amount of botanicals on-site in a polycarbonate polytunnel, designed to survive the high winds in Orkney. They have even managed to grow a number of citrus trees, which is pretty impressive! The passion they show is evident in all elements of the production process, they even bottle and label their gin by hand, and their stunning design will stand out on any gin shelf!

  Tasting Notes

Each sip of Vára Gin (Vára meaning become spring in Old Norse) takes you back to the springtime. Juniper led with rosemary, citrus, cardamom undertones, and a stunning sweet pink rose finish.

Stuart and Adelle suggest the perfect serve is ice, natural tonic water garnished with rose petals or elderflower tonic garnished with a lime peel twist or neat on the rocks with a wedge of lime.
