Part of the multi-award-winning Makar Gin family, Makar Cask Matured Oak Aged Gin is a delicious marriage of the vibrant, juniper-led Makar Gin with added smoky notes gained from ageing in 50-litre European virgin oak casks for a period of between 12 and 16 weeks (depending on the time of year).
Makar Oak Aged Gin was originally meant to be launched as a limited-edition gin available for a short period of time. However, the distillery received such great feedback, they decided to add it to the Makar Gin range as a permanent staple.
And they certainly know what they’re doing – the distillery’s cask matured gins have won the title of ‘Best Cask Matured Gin’ at the Scottish Gin Awards for three years running.
The enlivening power of the finest juniper berries forms the heart and soul of each of the five Makar Gin expressions, with Makar Oak Aged Gin being no exception. It’s an undeniably juniper-forward gin, but with a unique twist. The ageing process in the oak casks gives the gin unique smoky and woody notes. The cask ageing also gives the gin its 100% natural colour and like the rest of the Makar range, no sugar or preservatives are added.
The Nose: Fresh pine and smoky oak, juniper and eucalyptus mellowed by soft notes of vanilla, warm spices and cinnamon.
The Palate: Great complexity. Smoke, charcoal and toasted wood. Juniper remains at the fore alongside mellow botanicals, Hints of orange and vanilla.
The Finish: Warming peppery finish, pine sap sweetness with notes of caramel and toffee. Soft smoky undertones.
Makar. Oak Aged Gin is perfectly paired with ginger ale over ice with a wedge of fresh orange or fresh lime.
