  The Barra Atlantic Gin Story

The Isle of Barra is a remote and breathtakingly beautiful island in the Outer Hebrides with beaches that sweep into the wild Atlantic waves, this is a place for people with a sense of adventure. and it’s this adventurous spirit of Barra and its people that inspires this unique gin. Multi-award-winning Barra Atlantic Gin is distilled from 17 handpicked botanicals foraged from the island shores, capturing the essence of the beautiful landscape. Born from the island, every drop is distilled, bottled and labelled on the Isle of Barra.

The story began in 2017 with husband-and-wife Michael and Katie, and now the team has grown to five. They may be a small team but they all work passionately to build and strengthen the Isle of Barra Distillers together. It is clear to see that their island home is so close to their hearts and the major drive behind the Isle of Barra Distillers ongoing success and with exciting plans afoot to produce whiskey at the distillery, that success looks set to grow.

Created with 17 carefully selected botanicals, it is the Carrageen Seaweed that makes Barra Atlantic Gin stand out. Each and every piece of this key botanical is hand-picked from the shores that surround their Island home, creating a bold flavour, rich in maritime notes that can transport you to its sandy shores.

  Tasting Notes

The Carrageen seaweed provides bold, maritime flavours, with a huge, menthol lean and a pinch of salty air.

Juniper dominates proceedings, it is dry and rich, flanked by the Carrageen and strong enough to paint the air a rich, herbal green.

A spice nip kicks in, but liquorice roots start to weigh the tongue down towards the end of the sip, adding a sweet viscosity that makes us think of saltwater taffy.

It makes for a great G&T. Refreshing and clean, with a long, gratifyingly warm spice finish that opens out like the vast vista surrounding its beautifully remote home. But the key to a perfect Barra serve is a little patience, take your time, enjoy & relax;

  • Add a dash of ice to a low-ball glass. Gently squeeze your pink or red grapefruit across the ice, just adding a few drops & no more.
  • Pour a large measure of the Island Spirit into your glass (50ml)
  •  Add a splash of Walter Gregor’s premium Scottish tonic water & slip your wedge of grapefruit in.
  • Give a generous stir with a spoon, making the bold flavours & salty notes burst out.
  • Finally, sit back & enjoy the award-winning Barra Atlantic gin as the carrageen rolls across the tongue like the mighty Atlantic surf breaking on the shores that surround the Isle of Barra.

  The Scottish Gin Society verdict

Firstly, if you’re a fan of great packaging, you’ll love the stunning marbled design that wraps your bottle when it arrives – reminiscent of the surf and seaweed the gin is famous for. This is a great dry gin with a persistent juniper flavour that’s accentuated by waves of complex flavours. We got a wonderful sweet and salty hit. This island-born gin is bold, brave and incredibly refreshing.
