  The Badachro Gin Story

Gordon and Vanessa Quinn run a Bed & Breakfast in the spectacularly stunning village of Badchro in the Scottish Highlands. A few years ago, guests were regularly asking them what the area is well known for and looking for local souvenirs to take home. The couple’s answer was always the shellfish (it’s awesome, apparently) but it’s not really easily transportable for tourists.

Vanessa had recently retrained as a horticulturist and she suggested making something from the local plants so the pair started experimenting with all sorts of ideas, including a perfume, room diffuser to a liqueur, then finally the light bulb moment came to them. Well, it was obvious really, Gordon and Vanessa both love gin, so the seed of the idea of Badchro Gin was sown.

With the sea, the mountains and the fresh air of the Highlands all around them, Gordon and Vanessa set about creating a gin that bottles the beauty of their surroundings, and when they hit upon a recipe they were both happy with, the Badachro Gin journey began in earnest.

The gin is genuinely small-batch and artisan and is strongly centred around the provenance and love of the local area. The locally-grown myrtle adds a very unique flavour element and combines deliciously with the juniper in the gin to give visitors a real taste of Badachro to take home with them!

And should you want to experience the beauty of the hamlet of Badachro as well as the distilling of the gin, The Quinns now run wonderfully personal and small-scale distilling experiences, where you can visit them, see the distillery and – of course – taste the gin and bring a taste of Badachro home.

  Tasting Notes

Badachro Gin is very aromatic, with a juniper & myrtle forward start, giving way to a slight sweetness from cubeb & liquorice and a slight tingle on the tongue from nutmeg and then ends with citrus & lavender. It’s a hugely complex gin and superbly round in the mouth with the full flavour taking 40-50 seconds to fully develop.

  The Scottish Gin Society verdict

The true beauty of this Highland gin lies in its complex, but perfectly balanced flavour profile. The floral notes go hand in hand with rich herbaceous tones, the juniper is detectable and we also got a subtle sweetness and a hint of citrus. If this sounds like a lot of flavours, it is! But this gin carries the blend off perfectly and we can visualise the pure beauty of Badachro with every sip.
